Effective teacher talk: Discourse analysis in the field of second language acquisition

In this article, the author provides an analysis of Teacher Talking Time (TTT) within the framework of the communicative approach. The aim is to raise teachers’ awareness of the effectiveness of their talk in their language classrooms. The focus of the analysis consists of a typewritten script of an audio-taped lesson which will examine the quality of the communication which takes place during classroom interactions. The criteria that will determine whether the teacher’s speech acts promote learning in the students lie in several authors’ categorizations of functional language. These language functions will be identified and assessed in terms of their pedagogical effects in the students’ learning.
